Dr. Aoki of JAXA/EORC got the Yamamoto Award from the Meteorological Society of Japan in 2024

Dr. Shunsuke Aoki, Researcher of JAXA/EORC, got the Yamamoto Award from the Meteorological Society of Japan (MSJ) in 2024, as “Achievements related to effects of low-level wind on the diurnal cycle of tropical coastal precipitation”.

Award Ceremony (13th November 2024 @ Tsukuba International Congress Center)

His research (Aoki and Shige 2024), which was the reason for the award, was based on long-term observations of the Precipitation Radar (PR) onboard the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM). The TRMM, which was launched by the H-II rocket No. 6 on November 28, 1997, continued observation for 17 years, exceeding the design life of 3 years and 2 months. The PR developed by JAXA (formerly NASDA) and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) was installed on TRMM and made a significant contribution to research in the field of precipitation.
The Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) onboard the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Core Observatory, launched on February 28th, 2014, took over the mission of PR, and the Precipitation Measuring Mission (PMM) observatory is planned in JAXA. JAXA continues global precipitation observation.
