Mr. Ishida won the 2020 GEO Individual Excellence Award
JAXA is proud to announce that Mr. Chu Ishida, Senior Expert at Satellite Applications and Operation Center (SAOC), Space Technology Directory I, won the 2020 GEO Individual Excellence Awards. This award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional personal commitment to the mission of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) (*) and whose work has had a tangible impact to improve our planet through Earth observations.
(*) Note: GEO is an intergovernmental partnership established in 2005 based on agreements made during a series of World Summits on Sustainable Development (WSSD) and the Group of Eight (G8) Meetings. GEO promotes open, coordinated and sustained data sharing and infrastructure for better research, policy making, decisions and action across many disciplines. The GEO community currently focuses on three global priority engagement areas: The United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Paris Agreement, and the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.
Examples of outstanding accomplishments by the awardees of the 2020 GEO Individual Excellence Award could include: being instrumental in generating energy within a community that has led to significant progress or achievements; using creative and innovative approaches to achieve collaboration; overcoming administrative, political, institutional or structural barriers to advance the goals of a community; engaging or mentoring youth; advancing a diverse and inclusive GEO.
Mr. Ishida won the Award for substantially advancing the activities of GEO’s initiative called the Earth observations in service of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (EO4SDG), as a co-lead. Of particular note is his achievement of connecting the Earth observation community with the national statistics community. His deep knowledge and passion for Earth observation and belief in the potential power of Earth observation to underpin sound decision making, sustained for more than 30 years, is apparent in the trust afforded to him by his GEO colleagues.
